Can fish drown?

Fish can drown under certain conditions.  It is not the water that keeps fish alive, but the oxygen in the water.  Fish breathe oxygen, just as we do.  The water contains oxygen that comes from the air or is given off by water plants.

A fish takes the oxygen out of the water by means of its gills.  When a fish is placed in a small tank of water, however, it may soon use up all the oxygen that is in the water.

If this happens, the fish suffocates.  This is why, if you keep pet fish, you must change the water frequently in order to give them a fresh supply of oxygen.–Dick Rogers

What is a capybara?

We usually think of rodents only as small, gnawing creatures, such as squirrels, rats and mice.

But can you imagine a rodent as big as a large goat?  The capybara is.  In fact, it is the largest rodent living today.

When fully grown, a capybara may be as long as four feet and weigh over 100 pounds.

Capybara

It resembles an overgrown guinea pig.  Its thick body is covered with coarse, reddish-brown hair.  It has webbed toes and almost no tail.

This big, water-loving rodent lives along the banks and rivers and lakes in South America, where it feeds mainly on water plants and other vegetation.

At the slightest sign of danger, the shy capybara plunges into the water, often remaining below the surface for several minutes.

When resting on land it sits on its haunches like a dog.  The capybara’s voice is a low clicking sound.  It also makes sharp whistles and sometimes grunts like a pig. – Dick Rogers

What is a sea cow?

Sea cow are large water animals that look somewhat like seals.  “Sea cow” is the popular name for the manatee and dugong, which are sea animals that look somewhat like a large seals.

The sea cow is an awkward, slow-moving animal with no hind legs.  Its front legs are paddle-shaped and it has a broad, shovel-like tail.

A very large sea cow would weigh more than 1,500 pounds.   Sea cows prefer to live quietly in warm, shallow bays and coastal waters, and in certain large rivers.

Sea Cow

They feed on water plants growing in the shallow water, and are often seen in small herds, browsing like real cattle grazing.

Since they are mammals, they must hold their breath under water, and come to the surface often to breathe.

The mother sea cow feeds her baby mild.  The baby called a calf, is born under water.

The mother pushes her newborn infant to the surface for its first breath of air.  She carries the little animal on her back so that it is above water, then dunks it repeatedly until it learns to breathe correctly.  – Dick Rogers

Why did the dinosaurs disappear from the earth?

Probably no one will ever know for sure why dinosaurs disappeared.  But scientist thin that it was because the dinosaurs couldn’t change to fit themselves to a changing world.

Long ago, when the big dinosaurs roamed the vast swamps that covered much of the land, great changes slowly look place on earth.  Mountains began to appear and the great seaways drained from the continents.

Dinosaur

The warm, swampy land grew dry and chilly.  And the water plants that they are disappeared.

As the plant-eating dinosaurs died out, the meat-eating dinosaurs that depended on them for food also began to disappear.

These changes took place over millions of years.

Everything we know about dinosaurs comes from fossils which are the petrified remains of the dinosaurs’ bones and teeth.

By studying these fossils, scientists can tell what the dinosaurs looked like when they lived on earth.  – Dick Rogers
